29 Aug Letter from the Bishop’s Council

Dear Diocese of the Upper Midwest,

Two weeks ago the Provincial Office announced that Bishop Stewart will go to an ecclesiastical trial. While we are saddened by this news, we are grateful that the ACNA Canons provide an adjudication process in which all sides will be heard. If you missed Bp. Stewart’s letter, you can read it here.

We know that the last two years have often been confusing and challenging as we await news from the Province. (For background, check our updated FAQs.) The Diocese will continue to communicate the steps ahead as we learn more.

Meanwhile, your diocesan leaders are dedicated to supporting our churches and you. The Bishop’s Council remains committed to partnering with Bishop Stewart and providing him counsel as he leads and serves our Diocese through this challenging season.

We continue learning how better to serve the people in our Diocese and desire to improve where needed. We give thanks for the countless hours that gifted leaders, both clergy and lay people, and outside experts are giving to cultivating the Diocese. But the real work of the diocese takes place among our people and churches, every one of you following Jesus, serving as his hands and feet daily. We rejoice in the life-transforming fruit in each congregation and through you. May the Lord equip and encourage you to continue a life of faith and love for our hurting world.

We assure you of our continued prayers and ask for your ongoing prayers for everyone involved, including Bishop Stewart, our leaders, all survivors of Mark Rivera’s abuse, and others suffering. Please pray for truth and justice to prevail and for a clear, timely resolution that honors the Lord and his Church.
